Sclerotherapy

Studies have found that 50 percent of adult women suffer from unsightly clusters of red, blue or purple veins known as spider veins. The unsightly veins usually make their way onto the thighs, calves and ankles. In south Florida where shorts and shirts are often worn, people are particularly self-conscious about the presences of spider veins.

Sclerotherapy is a procedure specifically designed to treat and eliminate spider veins. The non-surgical procedure uses a sclerosing solution which is injected directly into the veins. The solution causes the veins to collapse and fade from view. Sclerotherapy is also designed to eliminate annoying, sometimes painful symptoms associated with spider veins such as aching, burning, swelling and cramping.

Why Do Some Women Have Spider Veins?

Unsightly spider veins develop as a result of various factors such as:

  • Weight gain
  • Shifts in hormone levels
  • Medication
  • Prolonged sitting
  • Prolonged standing
  • Pregnancy
  • Heredity

Are You a Good Candidate for Sclerotherapy

Although some women develop spider veins at a very early age, the majority of procedures are performed on women aged 30 to 60. Some women begin to notice the development of spider veins during pregnancy, however they are advised to wait for treatment until after they are done breastfeeding.

What to Expect

Sclerotherapy is designed to visibly reduce the appearance of spider veins and, as a result, enhance your self esteem and physical appearance. Depending on the amount and darkness of your veins, your surgeon may suggest scheduling more that one treatment sessions to get achieve your desired goals.

Keep in mind, slerotherapy will not prevent future spider veins from appearing and may not get rid of the existing ones completely. It is important to openly discuss your expectations with your surgeon so you know what to expect and are not disappointed with the results.

The procedure is relatively simple and is typically performed in an out-patient setting such as in your plastic surgeon’s office. The procedure usually takes 15 to 45 minutes depending on the severity of your condition. One injection is administered for every inch of vein; upon each injection you may experience a mild burning sensation.

Following the procedure you will be free to return home. Cramping of legs is a typical side effect and may last for a couple days. Your surgeon may require you to wear support hoes after the procedure depending on how many injections are necessary.

Possible Risks

Although risks are very rare, they include:

  • Blood clots in the veins
  • Allergic reactions to the solution
  • Inflammation
  • Permanent scarring
  • Pigmentation irregularity
  • Appearance of blood vessels
