Scar Revision

Scars are a permanent physical fixture caused by accidents, disease or surgery.  Generally, it is difficult to completely remove evidence of a scar. It is possible, however, to minimize the visual (and sometimes physical) impact.

Scar tissue can be greatly reduced and scars that impede physical movement can sometimes be revised to restore range of motion.  If they are located near a natural fold or crease in the skin, scars can sometimes be moved to a concealed position.  They are treated with both surgical and non-surgical methods, depending on the size and type of the malformed tissue.

Some of the most common methods used for scar revision include:

  • Z-plasty
  • Skin grafting
  • Flap surgery
  • Laser skin resurfacing
  • Dermabrasion

What to Expect

Depending on the severity of the scar and which method your surgeon deems most sufficient, the procedure can take anywhere from a few minutes to a few hours. Patients typically experience some discomfort, swelling, bruising and redness following the procedure.

The sutures are usually removed a few days after surgery. Even though the scar will not be completely removed, it will improve. The surgeon will give you a treatment plan following surgery; for maximum improvement, it is very important to stick to the guidelines outlined by your doctor.

Patients are usually able to return to work within a week and strenuous activities within 2 weeks. As with any procedure there are possible risks that may occur. Risks of scar revision include infection, bleeding or little to no signs of improvement. Keep in mind, it can take up to a year for the scar to fade and mature.

Are You Considering Scar Revision?
