Juvederm

If you are worried about facial wrinkles and signs of aging, look no further. Juvederm is a non-surgical, injectable gel that is designed to eliminate wrinkles and nasolabial folds. The gel was created by the manufactures of Botox ® Cosmetic and is becoming more and more popular among those fighting to maintain supple, youthful looking skin.

Juvederm is a dermal facial filler that is made of hyaluronic acid, a naturally occurring substance in your skin that helps to add volume and hydration.

According to the American Society of Plastic Surgery, hyaluronic acid dermal fillers like Juvederm are the fastest growing non-surgical option for reducing fine lines and smoothing facial wrinkles. They are also used to plump up thin lips which occur with aging. Juvederm has been proven to be safe and effective and is the only dermal filler FDA approved to last up to one year.

What to Expect

The non-surgical procedure is typically performed in your plastic surgeon’s office. Topical numbing cream or local anesthetic injected as a dental block is used to minimize discomfort. The procedure usually can take up to 45 minutes, depending on the number of injections necessary and the results are immediate. Patients typically experience side effects including, redness, swelling, bruising, itching, tenderness, tightening of the skin, slight discoloration, and lumps and bumps at the injection sites.

To avoid bleeding and severe bruising, it is important to avoid taking aspirin, ibuprofen, or vitamin E supplements prior to treatment. If you have a history of facial cold sores, make sure to tell your surgeon so he/she can prescribe medication to avoid reoccurrences.

As with all procedures, there is a slight risk of infection, although there have been few reports of infection following this type of procedure.

The effects usually last up to 12 months, and a patient may require additional injections for the desired results. The hyaluronic acid used in Juvederm naturally absorbs into the body after a period of time, without risk of illness or reaction.
