Eyelid Surgery
The eyes are the windows of the face. When they start to show signs of aging, the result is a tired appearance. Eyelid surgery, or blepharoplasty, is designed to reduce the affects of aging and improve the appearance of the upper eyelids and/or the lower eyelids. Eyelid surgery restores a youthful appearance by firming the area surrounding the eyes. Eyelid surgery leaves patients with a rested appearance by treating the following:
- Excess skin that hangs from the upper eyelid
- Excess fat deposits that cause puffiness in the upper and/or lower eyelids
- Sagging lower eyelids
- Bags under the eyes
- Fine wrinkles of the lower eyelid
What to Expect
During the initial consultation, Dr. Stokes will have you explain your goals and expectations for the surgery so she can determine whether you need upper or lower eyelid surgery, or both. She will develop a customized plan to suit your needs and ensure the best results.
Depending on what you two decide, there are a few ways to proceed. For upper eyelid surgery, she will make an incision in the natural crease of the upper eyelid to remove excess fat, muscle and skin. An incision will be made either inside the lower eyelid to remove excess fat only or below the lashes to remove excess fat, muscle and skin to get rid of baggy lower eyelids. There are additional techniques available that Dr. Stokes will discuss with you. Blepharoplasty is an outpatient surgery that is typically performed in and office or hospital operating room.
The procedure should take 1 to 3 hours for both eyes and patients are able to return home the same day of surgery. After surgery, the patient will experience bruising and swelling for about 4 weeks. Incision lines may take up to 1 year to fully refine.
