Breast Reconstruction

Breast reconstruction surgery is designed for women who have had one or both breasts removed as a result of cancer or trauma. Breast reconstruction can restore a woman’s self esteem and femininity.

The procedure helps women regain breast contour and balance, and allows women who have had their breasts removed the ability to go without relying on an external prostheses. Advances in technology have made it possible for surgeons to use implants to match a patient’s natural breast size, shape and appearance. Some techniques use a patient’s own tissue to make the breasts look and feel natural.

In most cases, doctors will perform breast reconstruction surgery immediately following the removal of the natural breast, other wise know as a mastectomy, while the patient is still under anesthesia.

What to Expect

Breast reconstructive surgery is an inpatient hospital surgery and typically takes a few hours after the mastectomy. Some women experience complete loss of sensation in their breasts after surgery, while others only lose partial feeling.

There are possible risks involved with breast reconstruction surgery, which you should discuss with your surgeon before making your decision to move forward with the procedure. Risks include excess bleeding, fluid collection, infection and excess scar tissue. Patients also risk having an allergic reaction to the anesthesia and medication used during and after the procedure.

There are continued risks after the implants are in place that you should discuss with your surgeon as well. If the implants shift or leak, for example, they may have to be removed.
